    Barb

The print "Barb" shows Joe's expressive use of line in his typically metaphorical imagery. This newborn calf is full of natural wonderment, yet is hemmed in by barbed wire as a flock of crows fly freely overhead. Joe has produced many prints throughout his career. This five colour serigraph shows the subtlety of his approach to printmaking, creating the illusion of a soft conte drawing with progressive layers of ink. When commenting on why he chose the screen printing process for this image Joe said "I'd do a litho, but that would be too easy". "Barb" is a classic image for Joe, representing his constant challenge with both image and process.
